Herbal Medication Abuse Is A Potential Pitfall

Herbal medication has proven itself useful for the treatment of just about every medical condition under the sun. From easing symptoms of menopause and prostate troubles to lessening cold and flu complaints, the applications for natural herbs are virtually endless. Despite this, herbal medication is still technically a medication. Even though it is “natural,” there is a potential for abuse. In fact, herbal medication abuse is considered a potential pitfall of going the natural route. This is especially so if users do not take the time or precautions to fully understand what it is they are taking. Herbal medication abuse typically results from a failure to understand all the facts of a particular supplement before taking it.

Herb medication abuse can come in the form of dependency in some instances or dangerous overuse or interactions in others. To prevent abuse, it is very smart for people considering herbal medications to carefully research the option. Some of the things to look at to avoid herbal medication abuse include: Read the rest of this entry »

Visualization And Weight Loss - See The Pounds Drop Away!

The surprising fact is that many conditions can be improved by visualization and weight loss is one of them. It works like this: you keep a vision in your mind of how you want your body to look, and subconsciously you will begin acting in a way that will go in that direction. You become much more positive about your body, more accepting of your diet or fitness regime, and you will reach your weight goals more quickly and easily.

Effecting change through visualizing desired outcomes has become more and more acceptable in recent years. Psychologists do not understand exactly how it works but clearly the mind and body are not as separate as we often believe. It seems that if you truly want something it is more likely to happen - provided of course that it is something that is possible, and within your control. Visualization helps us to truly want to lose weight by creating a clear and happy picture of our fitter bodies. Without this we can often put psychological traps in our own path. THE GREAT ABS MISTAKE

“He Was Doing One Thousand Crunches And Sit Ups A Day… But Still NO Abs!!!

By Tom Venuto, NSCA-CPT, CSCS www.aboutloseweight.info/burnthefat.html

After 18 years in the fitness business, “How do I get great abs” is still BY FAR the most frequently asked question I receive out of the 30,000+ emails that come into my office every month. No doubt, it’s because abs are the one body part that most people are the most frustrated with. Although their questions are often phrased differently and each person’s situation seems unique, my answer to “how do I get great abs” is almost always the same… and you’re about to hear it…

“1,000 Sit-Ups And Crunches A Day and Still No Abs!”

One question I received recently REALLY got my attention because a young guy told me he was doing 1,000 crunches and sit ups a day and said he still couldn’t see his abdominals. He wrote:

“Tom: I have been working out for around a year now and I cannot get my lower abs into any type of shape. I’m starting to see my upper abs a little bit, which is great, but despite doing 900 various crunches, ab roller, and 100 sit-ups four days a week, along with my regular workout on the weights, I still have a tire around my waist. What else can I do?”

What did I tell him? Well, I gave him the same answer I’ve given thousands of people over the years, which is the only true “Secret” to great abs…

It takes training to increase strength, build endurance and DEVELOP the abdominals, but to SEE the definition in your abdominals - or any other muscle group for that matter - is almost entirely the result of low body fat levels.

This may sound counter-intuitive, but if you can’t see your abs, it’s not an issue of “muscle development” at all. You simply have too much body fat covering up the ab muscles. The lower abdominal area also happens to be the one place that most people - especially men - store the body fat first.

Lower Ab Flab Is The Last Place To Go:

What is Rolfing?

Not everyone is familiar with Rolfing. If you heard the term for the first time, you might ask, “What is Rolfing?” Rolfing has only been practiced since the 1950s. A biochemist by the name of Dr. Ida Rolf developed a technique of manipulating the connective tissue of the body’s framework. If 10 people were to ask one who has been Rolfed, what is Rolfing, each person may have a slightly different understanding from the person he/she asked.

Commonalities to what is Rolfing are that the practitioner works to align the head, shoulders, torso, pelvis and extremities so that each part is in sync or in balance with the rest of the body and its center of gravity. The body can get out of balance because one or more parts are affected by the shortening of the connective fascia that holds all the muscles and their skeletal attachments together. What is Rolfing? It softens and breaks down the fibers so that all the muscles of the body can work in harmony and balance.

Someone with one hip higher than the other may ask “What is Rolfing going to do for me?” Over time the hip that is contracted may be able to be in alignment with the other hip, therefore allowing for a normal gait, and less back and hip pain. When one part of the body is out of balance, it can cause pain and in some cases malformations of the musculoskeletal system over time. Read the rest of this entry »

Alternative Medicine and Your Diet

One of the things that practitioners of the alternative medicine industry push is the fact that what you put into your body has an intense effect on your health.  Many practitioners will recommend herbs, vitamins and other supplements to assist the average person with occasional complaints, but for people with chronic or serious illnesses a special diet is often recommended.

There are many different diets that are commonly prescribed by alternative medicine practitioners for those patients with regular complaints.  Patients with diabetes and acid reflux are often put on diets to help improve their conditions.  For more serious illnesses like cancer, more strict diets are enforced.  Many people have had incredible luck beating cancer by using a macrobiotic diet.  Other people who have complaints of fatigue, weight gain, or just general poor health can often benefit from a detoxifying or cleansing diet.  It is important to follow a medical professional’s advice when trying a diet, so be sure to check with your practitioner before starting any restrictive diet.

Is Homeopathy Safe?

Homeopathic remedies are extremely safe and have no harmful side effects.  There is a risk of homeopathy medicine when needed therapies and/or diagnostic tests are excluded. In this case, a Homeopathy remedy and conventional medicine may be used hand in hand.

Two Barriers that Raise the Risks of Homeopathy:

• Time and patience are needed to find the right homeopathic remedy for your symptoms.  This process may take longer than using conventional medicine. Unfortunately, there is no standard remedy to cure every symptom.

• The remedy must be matched to your particular symptom, where it occurs, what brings it on, what aggravates it and other symptoms you experience.

• If the remedy is not one of 30 or so commonly used and readily available, it may be difficult to obtain.

After starting a homeopathic remedy, some patients feel worse for a brief period of time.  This is interpreted as the body temporarily stimulating symptoms while it makes an effort to restore health.  A treatment should stop when a symptom clears up.  Otherwise the treatment may produce a recurrence of the symptom.
